The Ancient Maya --- A People Like No Other

For thousands of years before the Spanish arrived, the Maya people inhabited southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.  Earliest evidence of the Maya civilization has been traced to about 2600 BC.  The Mayans developed writing (using glyphs), calendars, hierarchical societies ruled by kings and noblemen, and ceremonial temples.  They were accomplished astronomers, mathematicians, philosophers, artists, architects, and warriors!

The first great Maya city was Tikal in present day Guatemala.  Its dominance lasted for about 350 years until its decline in the late 800’s AD.  In general, Maya history can be characterized as cycles of rise and fall.  City-states rose in prominence, and when they fell into decline, they were replaced by others.

Starting around 1200 AD the Maya civilization entered a period of rapid decline and ultimate collapse.  There is no single explanation for this implosion, but some scholars believe that environmental factors, such as polluted water and disease, were leading causes of their demise.

Now the Maya live again!  Many of the Maya classic kingdoms are being excavated and restored to their original grandeur and await your visit to observe first-hand how the Maya observe civilization lived.  Paved roads, new hotels, delightful native and international cuisine, and friendly, bilingual guides make travel to these stunning sites a comfortable and magical travel adventure.  Come experience the Maya culture with Toucantour!!!
